Don’t forget to bring a re-usable bag and your curiosity for this amazing deal: A free lunchtime talk with researcher APrf Skye Akbar and artist Lawson Dodd in the Arcade Gallery on Level 1 of MOD.
Welcome to The Convenient Store, a pretend shopfront installation that encourages visitors to consider how our choices have value and what might influence our consumer habits aside from budget. And spoiler! There is no perfect product but being conscious of what influences us empowers us to be better consumers, activists and advocates in our everyday lives.
So let’s unpack packaging with Lawson Dodd, a Kaurna/Narungga/Ngarrindjeri artist and designer who designed labels for some of the mock products in The Convenient Store. His designs aim to highlight the difference between First Nations led products and those that only appear to support community.
Associate Professor Skye Akbar of the Waljen group of the Wangkatja Peoples is an Enterprise Fellow with the College of Business and Law at Adelaide University. Her research focuses on business in remote, regional and Aboriginal business contexts and empowering people with data. Her research is also embedded in the installation, considering how genuine support for First Nation’s businesses generates agency and economic engagement far beyond the transaction alone.
This talk is a part of Reconciliation Week and will be held on Kaurna Country. We acknowledge the Kaurna, Boandik and Barngarla Peoples, the Traditional Owners of the Adelaide University campuses, and pay our respects to their Elders past and present.
