It’s cold and rainy, a sign that the Kaurna season of Kudlilla has arrived. We’re going to put out weekly lists of things to do while you’re huddled inside. Next we’re looking at podcasts! If you’re not sure where to start here are some of the best things we’ve listened to recently.
Natalie: I have just started listening to this old-ish podcast recently and it’s been great. Nakkiah Lui and Miranda Tapsell talk with guests about race, sex, fatness, gender, and lots more. Nakkiah and Miranda have such good chemistry, listening feels like hanging out with some friends, but they’re excellent interviewers too.
Natalie: Hosted by Bobo Matjila (based in New York) and Flex Mami (aka Lillian Ahenkan, who’s based in Sydney), this podcast duo are not afraid to cross any lines. On a quest to decolonise their minds, intersect their feminism, and stay away from problematic boys, Bobo and Flex ask big and sometimes controversial questions. I tune in and out of this one, you might enjoy doing the same.
Kiah: This is a great podcast, Marlee Silva talks about so many gritty topics with really interesting Indigenous people. Definitely recommend this series, particularly the episode with Corey Tutt discussing science and scientist that have existed in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
Kiah: I love listening to Jameela Jamil she has such a nice voice and she is hilarious, inspiring and the conversations are so powerful and important. Some of those topics include mental health, weight and body issues and feminism, so really raw and vulnerable conversations.
Dearna: Nakkiah Lui and Miranda Tapsell attempt to decolonise the renowned Debutante Balls and look at how Aboriginal communities use these as a form of empowerment and to reclaim space, especially for Aboriginal women. The NAIDOC ball is a much loved social event in SA, and across the country. These have changed a bit from it’s Debutante traditions, however this podcast felt like one of those chats sitting around the table with all the Aunties. Heartwarming and funny, but also moments of heartbreak. Revisiting the Ball through this lens, and uncovering more of its history and made me even more fond of this social annual event in SA.
Natalie: This podcast generally is not about race, instead looking at different pop culture moments or things and unpacking them, but the episode “The Karen” was super interesting. This episode is a deep dive into the words that black people in the US have used to refer to white people and the way that the internet has spawned the concept of the Karen.
Natalie: This podcast is hosted by journalists of colour as they explore the way that race impacts every part of society. A lot of good episodes on all sorts of topics that are important to think about recently. I really loved the episode “We Aren’t Who We Think We Are” which unpacked the family myth of Leah Donnella, Code Switch’s editor.
Natalie: A podcast of Sydney’s FBi Radio show of the same name. Hosted by Sara Khan and Darren Lesaguis, this is full of conversations for people trying to understand the value in their racial and cultural identity. Great for a different Australian perspective on race and culture, with a bonus of music.
Kiah: I really recommend this podcast as well. Sara is great and she has really interesting and engaging people come onto the show.
